The 509th is famous for engaging in five combat jumps during WWII; Two during Operation Torch (The Invasion of North Africa, 1942), Tunisia (El Djem Bridge, 1942, Operation Avalanche (Invasion of Italy, 1943) and finally the Invasion of Southern France (Operation Dragoon,
