This is a nice example of a German Krimschild metal shield award, attached to field gray wool Heer (Army) cloth backing. The wool is in great shape, with just a bit of fading, and no mothing. This example appears to have been crudely cut from a uniform and does not have a metal backing present but still retains the original antiqued brass finish, with minor corrosion present.
