During the Prohibition era, the distillery's whisky was sold as medicine, which explains the appearance and design of the whiskies. In 1994, the distillery was awarded the 'Royal Warrant' by King Charles III. He greatly appreciates Laphroaig's smoky single malt whisky and visits the distillery regularly. Laphroaig translates as "the
