This is a massive “crusader” style broadsword dating from the 1880s originating from the Mardi period in the Sudan where General Gordon was massacred at Khartoum in 1884

and rifling can still be seen throughout with a bore light

the wood stock is beautifully carved with decoration behind the barrel tang around the trigger guard and all along and under the fore end

making it more economic and simple to manufacture

while the 83d and 434th Squadrons settled down for the time being at Kermitola Airdrome not far away
